Avonworth Community
Hand illustrated art map of the Avonworth community, a small but vibrant suburban public school district nestled in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
Printed on a heavy acid free card stock locally in Pittsburgh.
Size: 11" w x 14"h
A little more about Avonworth:
Covering approximately 11 square miles, the district serves the Boroughs of Ben Avon, Ben Avon Heights, and Emsworth, as well as Kilbuck and Ohio Townships. Known for its excellence in academics, sports, and music, Avonworth offers an exceptional environment for families.
With walkable neighborhoods and hidden hiking trails, the community fosters close-knit relationships and a welcoming charm. Residents enjoy the beauty of rolling wooded hills and the rustic appeal of a place that feels like a retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle.
The history of these five areas reveals a rich tapestry of culture and growth.
Emsworth Borough, for example, sits on land once owned by the heirs of William Penn. One of the earliest homes in the area, the Arthur-Johnson House, was built overlooking the Ohio River and the Pittsburgh and Fort Wayne Railroad—a route once known to George Washington. Originally a summer retreat for a merchant escaping the steel industry, this house became a focal point of the community. The addition of the Laurel Run commuter railroad station made the area even more accessible, drawing wealthy merchants and executives to nearby Ben Avon and Avalon.
Ben Avon Heights emerged as a haven for Pittsburghers seeking rural summer homes, blending convenience with serene surroundings. Ohio Township takes its name from the Ohio River, while Kilbuck Township honors Chief Kilbuck of the Shannopin Indians. Interestingly, Kilbuck Township was once the southern part of Ohio Township, reflecting the area’s evolving boundaries and rich cultural heritage.
From its scenic beauty to its strong sense of community, Avonworth offers a unique blend of history and modern living—truly a place where families can thrive and create lasting connections.
